Catherine Flannery, nee Scally as a 17 year old buffer girlCatherine Flannery, nee Scally: Kate Flannery and her cousin Stephanie Kirkland (top left) told us about their grandmother Catherine Flannery, nee Scally. She was paid 2s 6d by the sculptor F.W Pomery to pose for the friezes on Sheffield Town Hall (top right).

Catherine was a 17 year old buffer girl at a local steel firm at the time and she and two of her colleagues posed for the artist. There is a photograph of the three of them (right). The finished friezes run along the front of the Town Hall (the close up at the bottom shows some of the detail).

Catherine was from an Irish family who lived in the St Vincent quarter of Sheffield. Her youngest son, Martin Flannery, became the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hillsborough and Kate, her granddaughter, is a Principal Policy Officer in Sheffield Council.

Kate Flannery & Stephanie Kirkland were interviewed by Liz Cashdan on 17 June 2009.
